The cumare or chambira palm yields a natural fiber, obtained by removing the outer layer of the stem. The dyes are also natural, derived from seeds, roots, leaves, clay, flowers, fruits, and barks. These materials are washed, macerated, and cooked to create the dyes. The cumare tree has many thorns on its trunk. For the thread, the heart is cut without mistreating the plant, using a hooked knife or crescent-shaped blade. It's a very laborious process. The threads must be unraveled, washed, cooked, and dried for two or three days in the sun before being prepared for weaving.
